TOP FOUR FINISH
Tottenham’s manager Tim Sherwood has said that the club needs to finish in the top four this season or he will face the wrath of chairman Daniel Levy, who is known as one of the hardest negotiators in football. The club invested in excess of £ 100 million on several new players in the summer. However, manager Andre Villas-Boas did not even see Christmas with his new team after he was sacked following a run of poor results. The club has made it a priority to finish in the top four, which will provide them with Champions League football next season.
Tottenham have been involved in the Champions League only once in their history. Due to the absence of this prestigious tournament, they are unable to keep their stars for much longer. The departure of Gareth Bale is believed to have been the cause of this factor. The Welshman was sold to Manchester United for £86 million. Spurs reinvested the whole amount along with money of their own in order to bring in players like Roberto Soldado and Paulinho.
However, the club never got going Andre Villas-Boas this season after only managed to miss out on the top four last season. Bale was an influential figure, but Villas-Boas have to change the entire formation due to his departure.
“It’s been good. We know there are going to be tougher tests ahead, but it’s been a good start for me. If the season were to end tomorrow I don’t think the chairman would be too happy because we are fifth. The final league position has to meet the expectation of the club otherwise it’s ‘goodbye Charlie’. The club needs to finish in fourth place, we want to finish in fourth place,” said Sherwood, who has five wins in his six matches as the Tottenham manager.

IN DANGER?
Andre Villas-Boas is in danger of being sacked after the huge defeat that the Spurs suffered in their previous League game against Manchester City. City won that game by 6-0.
Yes, it was an away game for the Spurs, but, nobody had expected them to be thrashed in that manner. It would have been quite embarrassing for their fans.
Villa-Boas had spent a lot of bucks during the pre-season transfer window to strengthen his squad, but, his new signings have not managed to do anything significant so far in the ongoing season and according to the reports, the Tottenham board is running out of patience now.
After suffering that humiliating defeat against City, the Spurs have now drifted down to no. 9 in the league points table. That was their 4th defeat in the ongoing league. Now, there is a gap of 8 points between them and the table toppers Arsenal.
Tottenham’s performance has deteriorated quite a lot this month. In their last 3 League games, they haven’t found the back of the net even a single time.
In the press conference after that match against City, Villas-Boas had no hesitation in admitting that the performance level of his team in the game was extremely poor.
The Tottenham boss said, “It’s really an embarrassing situation for all of us. We did not get a single thing right. To have 6 goals scored against you with such a defence, it’s a shame.”
“We got trailed pretty early in the game and we fell apart after that. Now, all we can do is to ensure that we come back fighting next game.”
Tottenham’s next game is a Europa League encounter against Tromso IL. That game will be played at Alfheim Stadion on Thursday.

DEFOE EXCELS
Even though he has not been selected for the Premier league matches as starter, England international Jermain Defoe has been a revelation for Tottenham this season. He is the top scorer at the club right now after scoring numerous goals in the Europa league. He continued the rich vein of form in the 2-0 win over Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday night. After the match, manager Andre Villas-Boas agreed that the form of Defoe is giving him a lot of selection problems. This is especially true because Roberto Soldado has not been doing well in recent matches.
Even though he conceded this aspect, Villas-Boas hinted that he may have to stick with Soldado for the upcoming Premier league match because of who has played 90 minutes of football only on Thursday night. Recovery time is also very crucial in order to have the team performing in the best possible manner. Defoe is also very close to beating the record held by Martin Chivers for the most number of goals at Tottenham. Villas-Boas said that this would be a great achievement and it shows the quality of the player.
Defoe can be expected to be called to the Premier league starting lineup sooner rather than later. Soldado has not found the back of the net in recent matches.
“We have to judge recovery and the fact that JD was involved today and Soldado wasn’t. Everything will come into consideration. We have been extremely happy with the performances of both. It is a question of deciding what is best for the team. It was another great goal, a great finish. It’s really good to see him out there again doing extremely well whenever he’s given the opportunity. He is a great professional, has a great attitude,” said Villas-Boas after the Anzhi Makhachkala match.
